King Jammy’s Studio is a legendary recording studio and cultural landmark in Kingston, Jamaica.
Founded by producer Lloyd “King Jammy” James, the studio is considered one of the birthplaces of modern reggae and dancehall, known for its pioneering digital sound and global musical influence.
Lloyd “King Jammy” James, originally from Montego Bay, established the studio in the late 1970s after apprenticing under dub innovator Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock.
His studio at 38 St. Lucia Road quickly became a creative hub for Jamaica’s evolving sound system and recording culture.
King Jammy’s Studio gained worldwide recognition in 1985 with Wayne Smith’s “Under Mi Sleng Teng,” recorded there using a Casio digital rhythm preset.
The track marked the birth of the fully digital dancehall era, revolutionizing Jamaican music and influencing genres such as hip-hop and electronic music.
The studio went on to produce hits for artists like Black Uhuru, Admiral Bailey, Tenor Saw, and Junior Reid.
